The Blue Lagoon Beach Resort is a mighty good choice for families, adventurers, backpackers and young couples who want a text-book private island experience on a budget. Now, that's quite the statement but stay with us and you'll begin to agree with us. For those travellers who are over 30, the name of the resort and the island might bring back memories of the cult classic 'Blue Lagoon' movies. The films might be decades old, but the eponymous destination is still as fresh, and may we say... even better? The Blue Lagoon Beach Resort is set on the Nacula Island in the Yasawas, Fiji. The islands are renowned for glassy-blue waters, forest-clad hills, tiny green islets dotting the ocean and great diving and snorkelling opportunities. Nacula is set 47 nautical miles away from the mainland of Viti Levu.
Once travellers have landed at the Nadi International Airport, they can choose to take the catamaran service to the resort or the seaplane options. The catamaran stops along other islands on the way and drops travellers at the Blue Lagoon Beach Resort in around three hours; the seaplane route is obviously faster and takes barely 20-30 minutes or so of flight time. The resort is set facing the beautiful lagoon of Nacula Bay, clear waters revealing the vast swathes of colourful coral covering the island. In fact, reaching the destination is a wonderful teaser of the fun times in store.
The Blue Lagoon Beach Resort has purposely limited its inventory to just 36 units spread all around the resort property, underlining the importance of the ‘getting away from the crowd’ ethos. From budget-friendly Bula Lodges and Garden Villas for couples and young travellers to luxurious Deluxe Beachfront Villas and Palms Villas, everybody can find the right accommodation.
To burn off the calories, the Blue Lagoon Beach Resort has activities galore. One of the best experiences are the limestone caves of Sawa-i-Lau – there are regular tours and a bit of scrambling and swimming leads to beautiful iridescent caves fed by the sea and rainwater. Then, the island has over 30 dive sites to choose from, enough to try out two uniquely beautiful sites a day every day for two weeks. And then, each of the dive sites has a different aspect at night! Discover pristine fan corals, shy sea-turtles, colourful nudibranchs, and the occasional nursery shark peeping in. Oh, and do sign up for the resort’s string band and kava session. What’s kava? Only the South Pacific’s answer to beer. It’s a centuries-old tradition/recipe that uses the roots of a pepper plant to make a mild drink. Then there are drinking traditions, rituals, and many songs associated… it’s fun evening, to say the least. Read all about the plant, the drink and the history in our blog ‘Kava: South Pacific’s Alt-beer?’
The resort also offers charters for handline fishing and game-fishing. There are also nature trails criss-crossing the hills and the view from the top is breathtaking to say the least. The whole of the island lies beneath your feet and the mighty Pacific Ocean stretches far out to infinity, broken only by other islands of the Yasawa chain in the background.
The resort’s Lagoon Bar and Restaurant is a convivial gathering spot for travellers every day; the casual dining atmosphere and large tables for communal dining helps with striking up conversations. The fresh, island-grown produce and seafood cooked to delicious consistency also helps. The buffet breakfasts have a lot of choice, from continental platters, freshly-baked breads, hot cakes, eggs done to your delight and more. We recommend the restaurant’s homemade Island Beef Burger and fries for lunch – they are finger-licking delicious. Dinner menus are varied and the resort showcases a beautiful meld of Fijian and Indian cuisines with changing themes – the Meke nights have the traditional Fijian oven-cooked delicacies and the Indian nights see flavourful curries as the main dishes.
