40 antique Indonesian-style villas were renovated, keeping to the values of traditional architecture. Locally-sourced timber, natagora matting for the thatched roofs and the island’s tribal knowledge were used to unite manmade construction with the island’s natural beauty. Working with sustainability in mind, the resort is a non-profit venture, giving back all proceeds to the local villages and the ecology.

Each of the 40 spacious villas is antique and has been lovingly restored. All of them line the beach, assuring guests of beachfront views and access, without compromising on privacy. Travellers have a choice between Deluxe Villas, which are perfect for couples looking for a romantic escape, Two-Bedroom Villas for families and Grand Villas for large families and groups. The final option is the Safari Tent, which we couldn’t recommend more for honeymooners. Overlooking a private white sand beach, this spacious tent is luxurious and cosy at the same time. There are no TVs, air-conditioning or Internet access in the villas; but with constant cooling breezes, plenty of activities on land and under the waves, no one misses them much.

The restaurant uses fresh organic produce from its own gardens, seafood from local anglers and beef, pork and chicken from its ranch – keeping the meals as fresh and tasty as possible. The Yacht Club offers fine dining, while a beachside BBQ is always on the cards, should travellers desire.

The resort delivers far more than what the pictures promise in activities. From swimming and snorkelling in its crystal-clear waters to walking nature trails, there is something for everyone to get involved in. The island has horses you can hire to ride on the beach, and for travellers interested in knowing about the resort’s efforts in conservation, the turtle conservatory is a great place to start. Kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding, mountain biking and crab hunting are some of the many activities that guests can partake in. Of course, the resort’s spa is the perfect retreat after a strenuous day of fun and games.
