Hi there – were you, by chance, looking up all the fun things to do and experiences to sample on a Fiji holiday at the Waya Island Resort? Oh great, because we were about to do a recount (for the internet, of course)! The Waya Island Resort is one of our favourites, with its remoteness, long stretches of champagne-gold sand beaches, crystal-clear emerald waters and luxe bungalows. But there’s plenty to see, do, eat and experience on Waya Island. Let’s start the island from the inside out – from the island outwards!
So, let’s say today’s the first day and you landed in Fiji in the morning, taken the scheduled catamaran or speedboat transfer to the island. Oh, you choppered in, did you now? Well, colour us olive green and … moving on! So, after check-in and unpacking, head over to the pool. The resort’s pool is large, faces the beach and is festooned with sun-loungers, extra-large pool umbrellas, and a cocktail is just a raised arm away.
The next morning, after a filling breakfast, head over to the activities desk and take a guided walk of the resort and the island’s jungle trails. The hike will wind around the island’s most scenic spots, the lush forests and epic selfie spots from the mountains. After you come back to the resort and have your lunch, check out the many in-house activities that you can sample over the days, like basket-weaving, hat-making tricks from coconut fronds, cultural lessons and so on. Do check with the activities director about the timings of the kava evenings; you’ll want to be there. Fiji first-timers, check out our blog on kava, you’ll get the down-low on it.
Fiji is known for being the soft-coral capital of the world, and it’s a fact not disputed or challenged… more than every other year. The mainland and its resorts and beaches are sweet, and the Mamanuca islands are simply awesome, too. But if you’re looking for singularly great, then you’ve got to head for the less-travelled Yasawa islands. Besides the resorts, there’s not much technology, or machinery (or people, for that matter) dotting the myriad islands and islets. The waters are superbly clear for miles around, bird call and waves dominate, and the forests are splotched with huge patches of flowering bushes and shrubs. But you’re heading for the water!
Take free snorkelling and kayaking gear and go buts exploring the island and the region’s amazing marine ecosystem. You can and should start with the regularly scheduled guided coral reef snorkelling trip, though – they’ll tell you secret spots even the internet doesn’t know about. We do, so… we aren’t spoiling the surprises. You’ll spend days on end exploring the reefs and further beyond, trust us. Do remember to get back in time for kava evenings.
Anglers, anyone? Right, then –book a fishing charter if you want some happy memories. The island chain’s deeper waters are ripe with pelagic species and you’ll be taking pictures with the best catches of your life, every trip. From mahi mahi to tuna, marlins, trevallies and beauties like the flametail snappers, giant snake mackerels and more!
You can also sign up for a visit to the island’s Yalobi village. Here, you’ll be able to see how traditional Fijian village life hasn’t veered much from centuries-old customs, practices and family-centric ethos. Oh, and on Sundays, you can dress up, visit the church and listen to the island choir bring joy to the gathered community.
The above covers the long and short of the major experiences and activities on the island. But, besides the above, the Waya Island Resort has a large roster of scheduled activities, cultural entertainment and programmes – just ask our South Pacific Specialists for an exhaustive list!
