The Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji has partnered with Tiger Self Defence to introduce Tai Chi sessions at the resort, directed at raising awareness of Chinese art and culture. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art developed for combat and self-defence, and has evolved into a form of exercise.

Samuela Tuinabua, founder of Tiger Self Defence says “This Asian art promotes and cultivates a security conscious mindset for those who practice it.”

Francis Lee, the general manager at Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji, notes that the initiative is aligned with the resort’s 2024 sustainability calendar, which emphasizes art and culture – a core value behind Shangri-La’s establishment. Lee says “Tai Chi is not just an exercise; it’s a celebration of Asian culture. As an Asian hospitality company with over 50 properties in Greater China and a significant portion of our clientele being ethnically Chinese, we are uniquely positioned to promote traditional Chinese arts and culture across our properties.”

Tuinabua further adds “This collaboration is a great initiative by Shangri-La’s management. Engaging younger generations in Tai Chi will not only enhance their health but also heighten their awareness of personal security and their surroundings.” Since graduating as a Tai Chi practitioner in 2016, Tuinabua established adult and children’s classes across 17 locations nationwide, supported by his partner organization LEDYS Mix Martial arts.
