The Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is synonymous with sustainable Fijian holidays where, as they put it so pithily – ‘eco-luxury meets timeless traditions’. The resort offers plenty of experiences in and around the island, from epic escapades to exhilarating excursions and more! Our South Pacific Experts jotted down many of the experiences and activities travellers can look forward to.
Diving is synonymous with Fiji, but that’s not the cookie-cutter reason why the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort has its very own dive centre. Because of the eponymous founder, the island sits inside the Namena Marine Reserve. The centre is inspired by the efforts and experiences of the conservationist Jean-Michel and his late father, Jacques Cousteau (who invented the SCUBA gear!). The dive centre is a source of education, hands-on experience and provides a one-day certification course. Of course, enthusiastic individuals can always opt for the three-day PADI certification and the master-level certificates. The resort even has its own on-site doctor to vet fitness levels!
The Namena Marine Reserve is a treasure-trove for divers, with innumerable multi-hued marine flora and fauna. The reserve contains famous dive sites like ‘Dreamhouse’ and ‘Dreadlocks’, which spellbind new and veteran divers without fail. Guests will also be drawn to the ‘Tabu’ – the resort’s very own protected marine area that showcases its conservation of a beautiful marine hotspot. Holidaymakers can also get to enjoy catamaran sailing, relaxing on private sunset cruises, kayaking across Salt Lake’s calm waters, and go for an early morning swim off the island’s clear waters. When it comes to water-based activities, the options are endless!
The resort has an introductory tour, which is very good for getting one’s bearings about the island. Then, guests can sign up for tours led by one of the resident marine biologists for guided snorkel trips and reef walks, besides ones for glass-bottomed boat excursions, and even hikes into the rainforest and waterfall. Along with the resort tour, guests can learn about the JMC’s community and conservation efforts through the nearby giant clam farm day-tour. As the sun goes down, visitors can look forward to some insightful nature presentations by the in-house experts at the bar. Need some alone time? Opt for some epic stargazing and spot a constellation or two by yourself!
Guests can choose many guided excursions in and around the resort, as they soak in Savusavu’s unfiltered, raw beauty. Visitors will appreciate a walkthrough of the resort’s botanical garden, introducing them to the island’s flora and fauna through the sight, smells and trivia! Guests can also escape to the island resort’s private islet – laze on its warm sands, dive to the corals below for a refreshing swim with its denizens, swim up for a snack and repeat! There’s also a visit to Naviavia Clan Island – with two sun-kissed beaches and clear waters, this historic island is a day of family fun and abandon. A trip to the nearby Kokomana chocolate factory remains a must-do for kids and adults of all ages – who can really say no to a day filled with chocolate! For silver travellers and those who just want to relax a day, could we recommend an authentic Fijian ‘tei tei’ picnic? Set amidst the lush grounds, engaging native guides will lead guests on a discovery of culinary traditions, history and cultural heritage through flavours.
