What to do in and Around Gizo - Activities and Attractions

What to do in and Around Gizo - Activities and Attractions

Gizo is an adventurer’s basecamp, when it comes to exploring the Western Province in the Solomon Islands. It has plenty of activities to offer and attractions to marvel at, which can be grouped into water-based activities, land-based attractions and finally, cultural experiences.

Gizo’s warm, gin-clear waters and its vast stretches of coral gardens make it a mecca for swimming and snorkelling. Guests can spend many a playful day riding banana boats, canoeing and kayaking to the many islets surrounding Gizo, soaking in Solomons’ peaceful ambience. Surfing is great during November to April – surfers would want to check out the as-of-yet undiscovered Titiana beach for a gentle right-hander, Makuti Island for short left-handers, and pro surfers can check out Skull Island to test their skills against Solomon’s largest right-hander. As always, local knowledge is invaluable for finding the best breaks, and the hospitable locals are always willing to share a tip or two.

Diving in Gizo is all about supremely jaw-dropping experiences. A naval battleground in WW2, Gizo’s waters are now dotted with wrecks that make for wildly photographic dives, not to mention the coral ‘cathedrals’ and their many residents. In fact, it is a local boast that divers can see up to 270 species of marine life on a single-tank dive! While the dive sites of Toa Maru and Grand Central Station are international draws, guests should not miss out on The Gap and One Tree Island.

Gizo’s waters are home to a large variety of fishes. It should then come as no surprise that fishing is a popular sport here. On a fishing trip, enthusiastic anglers can expect to catch anything from giant trevally to batfish to barracudas and tunas. Guests can then choose to either have it freshly grilled on the beach or release the catch back into the wild.

On land, hikes and rainforest excursions are a big draw. Explore well-marked trails and enrich yourself with knowledge of the local flora and fauna with guided hikes. Guests can and should check out Plum Pudding Island, or Kennedy Island as it is known today, for a mixture of hiking and history. Or, just spend a day lazing around on its pristine sands and snorkelling in its splendidly-clear waters.

Village visits and by extension, cultural immersion, has always been a big draw here in the Solomons. A visit to a nearby village can easily turn into a day of sampling indigenous ways of life and wisdom, enjoying their open-air ceremonies and tasting local brews and broths. Not just souvenirs, but guests carry back a lifetime of memories and a newfound appreciation for sustainable living.

Where to Stay - Gizo Resorts & Accommodations

As a part of the Western Islands in Solomons, Gizo is remote despite its liveliness – this means no big-chain commercial hotels and resorts. Instead, travellers can choose from locally-owned and operated boutique resorts and rustic hotels that offer barefoot casual accommodations for inimitable, relaxed South Pacific holidays. Gizo hotels, resorts and accommodations feature almost all modern amenities and incredibly warm service that modern international travellers are accustomed to. Honeymooners and couples looking for privacy will definitely appreciate the adults-only Sanbis Resort, which is barely seven minutes from Nusatupe airstrip. And scuba-diving enthusiasts, couples, fishing enthusiasts and anyone wanting the best of peaceful stays, good food, and idyllic days will want to check out Fatboys Resort. It’s but an eight-minute water transfer/ joyride from the Nusatupe tarmac.

When to visit Gizo, Solomon Islands - Weather, Seasons and Best Time

When to visit Gizo, Solomon Islands - Weather, Seasons and Best Time

Anytime is a good time to visit Gizo in Solomon Islands. Gizo’s weather is predominantly tropical, which translates to warm temperatures, balmy winds, and the occasional paint-peeling rainshower followed by the smell of petrichor. Cool winters span from May to October and are marked by cloudless skies, cool trade winds and calm waters, making outdoor activities like snorkelling, kayaking and diving thoroughly enjoyable. The monsoon season lasts from November to April and is known for overcast skies, frequent thunderstorms and turbulent waters. Though, the clear days in between are excellent for surfing.

From a cultural standpoint too, anytime is great for a Gizo holiday. Village visits make for excellent cultural immersion while the national holidays and festivals make for a day of unbounded fun and frolic. Gizo celebrates the Shell Money Festival in September with quite the aplomb while Easter in March-April is a full-blown carnival!

Getting to Gizo

Getting to Gizo

Getting to Gizo

Although getting to Gizo isn’t exactly a breeze, it’s fairly easy. International travellers need to fly to Honiara International Airport (HIR/AGGH) first. From somewhere like Brisbane, the flight takes somewhere between three to four hours. After clearing customs at Honiara, travellers need to hop over to the domestic terminal for an island hop to Nusatupe (GZO). From there, Gizo is but a quick boat transfer away.

In a nutshell, Gizo represents the very spirit of Solomons. Pristine beaches, unsullied waters, gently-swaying palms, idyllic stays and clocks that tick to island time, everything is evocative of a perfect island holiday.
