Reaching the resort is a straightforward, albeit hopping process. From Brisbane, the flight to Port Vila, Vanuatu is around two and half hours (three-and-half from Sydney). From Port Vila, a 90-minute domestic flight takes travellers to Luganville, where a five-minute cab ride leads to the last leg of the journey – Bokissa’s own speedboat to the island. Speed along the vivid, crystal-clear blue waters of the Pacific Ocean for 25 minutes until the white sand of the resort displays itself. There could even be a pod of wild dolphins announcing the boat’s arrival, which isn’t the worst way to start a tropical holiday!
The resort tags itself as ‘a little bit wild and perfectly private’, which isn’t at all far from the reality. Bokissa offers over 175 acres of tropical rainforests, tracks and white sand beaches for travellers to explore, along with miles of colourful reefs filled with fish, turtles, dugongs and dolphins.
All of the resort’s suites are prime beachfront property with the sea a few metres away from the front porch. Guests can choose between Beachfront Farés, Beachfront Duplex Spa Villas and Deluxe Beachfront Spa Farés, all of them air-conditioned. However, there are no TVs anywhere and the WiFi is limited to the public areas. That said, the large number of returning guests is testimony to the island’s wild beauty and barefoot luxury of the resort.
Outside the suites, there is a world of activities and experiences that Vanuatu and Bokissa offer to travellers. From diving the limpid blue depths for wrecks and reefs to hikes across hills, there is something for everybody. Snorkels, swimfins and kayaks are readily available at the activities desk or on the beach. Sign up for the Malo River kayak experience, where a guide will show you around the wonders of the Malo river, the nearby ‘blue hole’ where crevasses lead down to luminous pools of cool water, dolphin, turtle and dugong sightings and more.
Bokissa also boasts of amazing diving; there are scores of sites around the island and nearby sea-wrecks that elevate the island to world-class status. From USS President Coolidge which lies 20 minutes away from Bokissa, to SS M.V. Henry Bonneaud, the island’s very own wreck, there is never a ‘been there, done that’ moment underwater!
The wilderness walks around the resort will have hikers surrounded by varieties of blooming orchids, other wildflowers and tropical birds. There are also the Turtle Tour,Coconut Crab expeditions, island Sanctuary tours and more…. Just ask our South Pacific Specialists for the complete list of activities. The resort also has a traditional spa on-site to work out the aching muscles and kinks after a long day of fun.
