Resorts in Wellington
Windiest city in the world!
About Wellington
Set on the southern tip of North Island, this little capital city holds the plaques for the southern-most capital of a sovereign state as well as the windiest city! The little trivia aside, this city has grown from a typical Maori village outpost to a border town to a model capital city with numerous awards and felicitations. Even before colonial explorers and settlers laid their eyes on its verdant hills, Wellington has seen Maori presence as far back as 1280!
The city was named after the-then Duke of Wellington Arthur Wellesley, but its traditional name is Te Whanganui-a-Tara, which refers to the Wellington Harbour and Te Upoko-o-te-Ika-a-Māui. Being a central actor in the country’s history as well as being declared as the capital has influenced it being the hub of New Zealand’s art and culture. In fact, visiting it’s National Art Gallery, or Te Papa (Our Place) as it’s known in Maori, is a must-experience for any and every traveller.
Things to do
As a repository and conservatory of New Zealand’s art and culture, Wellington scores high on culture lovers’ itinerary. From Te Papa to the Wellington Museum, the Katherine Mansfield House and Garden, the Colonial Cottage, the Wellington Cable Car Museum, Old St Paul’s and the National War Memorial, it’s quite the few days of fun. Oh, and then there’s the Wellington City Gallery.
But it’s a mighty poor time to travel without tanking up on good food on a holiday – and here, Wellington shines like any megapolis. From world-class fine dining options to quirky fusion food joints to traditional cuisines around the world, there are options for anything and everything. From international to Maori to Asian and straight-up eclectic, it’s here. We strongly recommend foodies to sign up for Wellington food tours and explore the wine trails, go pub-crawling for beer and sample the really, really good coffee of the region.
Then, travellers can chill out at the beach, take the cable car and soak in the sights, and go for good old-fashioned picnic at the Botanic Gardens. Oh, and don’t miss a walk to the Mount Victoria Look-Out – the views over the city and the bay are simply magnificent.
