About Queenstown
With dramatic views of snow-covered mountains and the shimmering Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is definitely one of New Zealand’s most-visited destinations. It’s a hub of adventure, romance, fun and a major draw is its incredible natural beauty. One of the stories passed down here is that the town was named so because of the gold prospectors who fell in love with Queenstown’s beauty.
In fact, one of the place’s perennial draws is its’ very distinct seasons. Winters are characterised by periwinkle blue, clear skies, summers by long evenings and … it’s very sunshine-y here, to be honest. The season of spring mixes the crisp coldness of the snow with warm days while the winner is autumn. Then, the evenings burst into absolute red-gold panoramas which have to be seen and experienced.
Besides the natural beauty, Queenstown also boasts of a great number of restaurants, pubs, bars and food stalls worthy of a gastronome’s attention; in fact, some of the establishments like QT’s Bazaar are world-renowned.
Things to do
As mentioned, to experience or check off all activities that can be done in Queenstown is possible, but Herculean. Because of the mountain ranges’ dramatic incline, skiing and snow-boarding are high-octane activities that are practically world-class. Then, although this is the home of bungee-jumping, travellers can also indulge their adventurous bone with activities such as canyon-swinging, sky-diving (the views are simply divine!), jetboating, horse-riding and white-water rafting.
Gentler pursuits are also very much here – Queenstown has a number of hiking trails and biking circuits, perfect for exploring under one’s own steam. In fact, as a cycling destination, this town has a range of trails – from easy and meandering to quite demanding ones. But all of them offer excellent scenic vistas for the riders. For first-time visitors, we recommend trying out the gondola and going up the mountain – the views and the experience are simply fantastic. Self-drive tourists will find the Central Otago region to their liking, LOTR fans will be on a field-quest! Check out Arrowtown’s history of gold-mining, people can also sign up for gold-panning expeditions! Beyond that is the Lakes District Museum, Glenorchy and the aptly-named Paradise Valley. In fact, we’ve even jotted down our Top 10 Activities and Things to See, Do and Experience in Queenstown – have a read!
