About Paihia

About Paihia

About Paihia

The story behind its name goes that when missionary Henry Williams was observing the lay of the land with his scouts, he was asked which of the spots was good enough to settle down in. Since the word for ‘good’ translated to ‘pai’ in Maori, he finally to decided that this town was ‘pai’ here. Over time – Paihia!

It has an extensive choice of accommodations, delicious dining options and a good-sized town centre. Take a relaxing walk along unspoilt beaches, a long guided tour through historical sites or fishing, it’s all good! If adventure is the spice, try skydiving, parasailing, scuba diving or kayaking. Paihia is the place of friendly locals, happy cafés and people enjoying life. Whether it is swimming with delightful dolphins, taking in a spot of retail therapy or just lazing under a tree, Paihia is the place for it.

Things to Do

Things to Do

Things to Do

Paihia is an excellent base from which to explore the Bay of Islands. From the wharf you can arrange a trip to the outer islands, hook into a fishing expedition or catch ferry to Russell. For first-timers, we would recommend a helicopter ride of the Hole in the Rock, followed by an adventure cruise.

Top local adventures include cruising to the ‘hole in the rock’ at the tip of Cape Brett, finding dolphins (and even swimming with them) and sea kayak tours. Paihia is also just down the road from the historic Treaty House at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, which marks the beginning of New Zealand as a nation. For culture enthusiasts and travellers who want to learn more about a country they’re visiting, this is hallowed grounds. Just west of Paihia is Haruru, where you’ll find an impressive waterfall and a boardwalk.

It’s an easy drive of a few hours from any of New Zealand’s major cities, but we’d suggest a quick and painless 45-minute flight from Auckland’s airport.
