Resorts in Christchurch
It’s a cyclist’s paradise!
About Christchurch
Despite Auckland’s bustling liveliness and popularity, it was Christchurch which was probably the first habited settlement in this country. As Auckland is set on the northern end of the North Island, so is Christchurch set on the southern side of the South Island. Connectivity is provided via train, plane and by road – all options are viable. As one of the only four current cities in the world which have been planned out, Christchurch is amazing in many ways. It’s very easy to traverse within the city, everything is logically laid out, cycling is a pleasure, there are many sights and experiences related to the history and culture of the place and there are just so many trees, parks and natural foliage that Christchurch feels more like a city which gre around a forest. Which isn’t all that bad an idea, really.
Things to Do
There are a multitude of activities and experiences right off the bat when in Christchurch, but the main, must-do experience would undoubtedly have to be to take the Tranzalpine train journey. Ranked as one of the best train journeys in the world, the train woos travellers with incredibly varied and beautiful sights within 5 hours of travel time! It departs from the picturesque city of Christchurch, winding its way through the farming plains of Canterbury (yes, the early settlers were English and missed the home-country something terrible), over the meandering Waimakariri River and then onward to the town of Rolleston. On the second leg of the journey, the train quickly crosses five more rivers, five viaducts and an awe-inspiring 17 tunnels! But it doesn’t end there – train passengers will be treated to the mountain range of Southern Alps, back to the Waimakariri River which has carved the island into a massive gorge and then back to civilisation at Greymouth. All in all, it’s even more breathtaking than it sounds.
And that’s just the one experience out of several. Just renting a bicycle and exploring the city is a cheap-cost-effective way to travel around, the city council has made special routes for cycling and travellers should take advantage of that. Art aficionados should stop by the Arts Centre, the Canterbury Museum and the Christchurch Art Gallery – that’s well over a day spent checking out international masters. As we mentioned, Christchurch has been planned out and a lot of attention has been paid to conserving natural botanic heritage. There are parks, the Riccarton Bush (which is Kiwi slang for forest), the Botanic Garden, the Orana Wildlife Park and more! Adventure lovers should check out the guided off-road bike tours and some truly epic, world-class whitewater rafting tours a short trundle away from the city.
