City of Sails
About Auckland
This conurbation (which means a city and its surrounding villages/hamlets), called the Auckland Region, has always been the settlers’ choice over the centuries. Because of its easy access to both sides of the ocean, natural riches (gold, yes!), fertile lands and rolling pastures, Auckland has been at the heart of Kiwi history and ‘action’ since the early Polynesian settlers of the 1300s. The seat of power would be in windy Wellington, but everything else is in this metropolis.
As a cultural melting pot, this city is a smorgasbord of international cuisine, architecture, music and style. Besides the very obvious and omnipresent Maori and European influence, Auckland is also home to other Pacific countrymen like Fiji, Cook Islands, Tahiti, Vanuatu, new Caledonia and so on. And even more than that are Asian presence like Chinese and Indian population which has settled over the last couple of centuries.
Things to Do
Auckland is a major metropolitan city, but it’s uniqueness and draw stems from the fact that it’s so close to natural beauty, adventure and varied experiences. Don’t be surprised if you see herds of placid cows and sheep less than an hour away from highstreets of Freyburg Palace and Vulcan lane. Although the city and the townships are very well-connected by bus, tram and taxis, self-drive is very much an option if you prefer trundling in and around the city and the countryside. For culture vultures, we recommend a visit to the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, which houses many national and internationally-important artwork. Then the Auckland War Memorial Museum records the country’s involvement in world history and world wars, including housing many Maori and Polynesian artwork. For scenic vistas, Auckland needs no special effort – but we suggest the One Tree Hill for starters. Yes, the same one as U2 mentioned in their album.
