About Poum
How do you know a place is truly remote? When the people of a remote country call a place ‘a bit far off’. Set on the northern-most corner of New Caledonia, the true beauty of Poum lies in the fact that it is pristine. Pollution free, technology-free and ‘almost’ infrastructure-free. Of course, there was a fair bit of mining done in the past in and around the region, but that’s done and gone now. Today, Poum’s reef, its lagoon and the marine life form a part of a designated UNESCO World Heritage site which denotes its ‘Outstanding Universal Value’ to the world at large.
Poum is a quiet getaway holidaymakers can tag along to their New Caledonia holiday. Very off the beaten trail, this region often gives travellers the feeling of being in a time machine. With almost all sounds of mechanisation and technology muted and intermittent at best, it is not hard to imagine what the world felt like before the Modern Age, basking on a Poum beach.
Things to do in Poum
A fair advice to any and all travellers to this place. Poum is great for … self-starters. Because of its remoteness, the resorts are small, hotels are more like motels and everything takes place at island time. Which is always late in normal-speak. So, pick Poum for great diving, walks on the beach hand-in-hand, kayaking around and not for snappy WiFi, butler service and Egyptian cotton sheets.
Besides the scuba-diving, we would recommend signing up with the local charters for a day of game-fishing and trips to nearby islands. Here, a picnic on a private island is less of a dream and more of an afternoon affair. The sand shoals are excellent for amateur anglers, too. On land too, there are activities and experiences aplenty in Poum. Get on a sturdy pair of boots and tramp off into the Ougne forests, near the village of Arama. Or, visit the old copper mines at Pilou – take a guide who can regale you with stories, legends and history of the place.
Hotels & Resorts in Poum
As we said, Poum is great when it comes to amazing sights and sounds, not when it’s five-star comfort. It’s an inverse relationship and personally, we’re very thankful of the fact. Check out the Malabou Beach Hotel Poum, a great family-style resort with its own jetty. Comfortable rooms and suites, nice island-style dining and an all-around launch pad for solo and group adventures, this has it all. On a road trip from Noumea or Bourail?
