Over 29 Coral Atolls!
About Marshall Islands
The Marshall Islands are basically two strings of over 1,200 pearl-like islands and coral atolls at the northern extremity of Micronesia. Now, for those who don’t know what a coral atoll is – imagine water surrounded by a box-like strip of land, which is surrounded by even more water all around. That’s not a fairy-tale, but the atoll of Majuro – Marshall Islands’ capital. What’s more, this country has 29 of them.
Despite having very few thousands as population, these islands have a rich cultural tapestry over the centuries. For example, the Marshallese have a maritime history and some of the most unique navigational methods – of using waves themselves to gauge where the boats are heading. Using the rhythmic lapping of waves and the pause between, the sailors of old could pinpoint a patch of land amidst hundreds of miles of water and beach accurately! The islands and atolls were originally settled between 30 BCE and 50 CE by Micronesian navigators. After discovery and exploration by the Spanish, British and the Russians, the islands were converted to Christianity by Hawaiian missionaries. The world outside burst these islands’ peaceful bubble with WWII. Over the war, Marshall Islands came under the protection of Unites States of America, which did extensive nuclear testing at the famous Bikini Atoll and still holds a military base at the small Kwajalein Island.
The main island and capital Majuro is a box-strip of land surrounding a pretty lagoon, but the real tropical beauties are off the mainland – towards islands like Arno, Ailinglaplap and others.
Things to Do
Plenty! Did you know that, at one point of time, the Marshall Islands was called the ‘fishiest country in the world’ because of its absolute profusion of all varieties of marine life? In fact, the average Marshallese consumes around 240 pounds of fish in a ho-hum year! So, fishing enthusiasts will find these islands an absolute delight for fly-fishing, deep-sea fishing and bone fishing. Then, Marshall Islands are also world-renowned dive sites – it’s crystal clear waters, the wrecks of the many airplanes, boats and more around the islands are a testament of the long-past violence of WWII.
Exploring the islands is a breeze… and a chore. The chance of being lost on Majuro is infinitesimal – there is but the one road where traffic goes back and forth. We recommend exploring the other islands on day-trips, because there are very few hotels and resorts here. Oh, and you have to try spearfishing and learning to sail an outrigger canoe – there are absolutely legit life skills!
Don’t worry about overcrowding – Marshall Islands have one of the smallest populations for a nation, plus a very small number of experiential travellers making the trip over the Pacific Ocean.
Hotels & Resorts
There is good news and… not so good news. The latter is that there are very few hotels in Marshall Islands – with less than 10,000 travellers visiting this tropical paradise annually, the best hotels are comfortable 3-star affairs. So, forget high thread-count sheets and Gbps WiFi streaming service – this is the happy conflux which balances modernity in the form of hotels and beauty in the miles of crystal-clear waters and coral reefs.
