Resorts in Kosrae
History, diving and hiking wonderland
About Kosrae
Kosrae is one of the farthest states of Micronesia and is a true explorer’s delight. It has high, steep mountains which form the shape of a woman, giving it the affectionate nickname of ‘island of the sleeping lady’. Surrounded by fringing reefs of hard coral well over 1,000 years old and plenty of aquatic life, Kosrae is also a diver’s paradise. Dotted with forests, waterfalls, mangrove jungles and citrus trees, this island is a perfect terrarium in itself. It also has plenty of wartime bunkers and sites for history buffs.
History
This island has history which can be tracked back to the first millennium – in fact, from ancient burial pyramids to sunken British pirating vessels, this island has it all! It was originally a well-populated village with a ruling nobility around 1250 AD. Then, the Spanish spotted Kosrae in 1529, but made no contact with it until well after 1885. Interestingly, the famous pirate Bully Hayes was shipwrecked near Utwe in Kosrae. His schoonerLeonorais a perennial dive favourite (that’s buoy 19 for reference!). During WWI, this island came under the rule of the Imperial Japanese Army, who developed the infrastructure extensively. We absolutely recommend a tour of the underground army bunkers burrowed into the hills!
Things to Do
For one island, Kosrae has over 50 distinct dive-spots around it! From healthy coral gardens to schools of sharks, barracudas and other pelagic fish, divers will marvel at the underwater wonderland that is Kosrae. The visibility underwater goes up to over 200 metres on a good day! Then, nature lovers can opt for mountain hikes, exploring jungle trails and the island’s mangrove forests and its endemic flora and fauna. The Utwe/Walung Biosphere Marine Reserve is of particular note for all diving enthusiasts. Ask our South Pacific Specialists for more ideas on what to do, eat and experience when planning your Kosrae getaway – we’ll even make it all-inclusive with flights, meals and transfers!
