Each of the four rooms feature a queen size bed, a single bed, an ensuite bathroom with hot water showers, ceiling fans, a desk and a common patio with outdoor furniture. Apart from the four rooms, the motel has a separate building which houses the very spacious common kitchen, the laundry room and the lounge where travellers can meet up; the latter also doubles up as Babe’s Bar – which comes alive and parties on late during weekends.
Babe’s Place also supplies rental cars and bikes for travellers to sally forth and explore the island on their own; and there’s a-plenty to see, do and experience here! Mangaia is more for experiential travellers or couples who really want to disconnect from the tech bubble and reconnect. It’s a quiet island, where everything flows at its own relaxed pace, everyone knows another and all is chill. Whale watching is excellent from July to November, as is game-fishing – just walk down to the harbour and ask the fishermen on when the next boat is leaving for deep waters! Speaking of the harbour, the island has a pretty little example of one with a little strip of golden sand beach lining it at both ends. For first timers to Mangaia, we’d recommend signing up for island tour and one of the three villages of Onerua, Iviroa and Tamarua. As placid as island life is there, it’s a brilliant insight into the unique meld of Polynesian culture and devout Christian values they have. Oh, Sunday Church – must attend.
Travellers who can do a bit of hiking should not miss caving adventures – it’s a fantastic glimpse into how the island folks buried their dead centuries ago. Some of the caves require a guide and a little agility, too. Then, there is swimming at the Tuaati rock pools, visiting the pineapple and taro plantations, snagging invites to a cultural dance show and so on… there’s plenty of things to do, as we said.
