How to get to Taveuni Island
The easiest, and quickest way is to fly in from Nadi or Suva. The flight time is about 70 minutes, offering a bird’s eye view of the jaw-dropping vistas. Or, travellers can avail relaxed, cheaper catamaran/boat transfers. The latter presents a unique opportunity to soak in Fiji’s tropical beauty , one beautiful island at a time.
Things to Do
It is natural for nature lovers and adventure lovers to land up in Taveuni, Fiji. This volcanic island is home to many attractions and exhilarating activities on land and in the water. Up to 80% of the island is covered by Bouma National Park’s protected forests, home to the famous Tavoro waterfalls, the serene Lake Tagimaucia and the Lavena coastal trail. The park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna including birds like Kula Lorikeets, Silktails and the Fiji Goshawk. Visitors will come across plenty of indigenous flora, including Balaka Palm, Vesi and Dakua. Fiji’s national flower – Tagimoucia – blooms near the shores of the eponymous lake between October and January and visitors from all over the world congregate to appreciate its beauty. Bauma is also home to the elusive Fijian Swallowtail Butterfly and one of the world’s largest beetles – the Fijian Longhorn.
The park houses Fiji’s second highest peak – Uluigalua. The peak has a commanding presence, dominating the Taveuni skyline and is home to the beautiful lake Tagimoucia and the flower itself. Also on the island is the De Voeux peak, which on clear days offers magnificent views of the island and the Pacific! A hike to these peaks are highly suggested, given that part of the journey can be easily covered with a 4WD.
There’s also plenty to do in the waters off Taveuni island! The glassy waters blanketing the coral gardens are great for swimming and snorkelling. The reefs are home to a wide variety of life forms including anemone, unicorn fishes, surgeons and slugs like nudibranchs. Inquisitive reef sharks and rays are pretty common too! The nearby Somosomo strait will appeal to veteran and enthusiastic divers alike. It is home to the Rainbow Reef (which is simply magnifique!), its equally colourful citizenry, and the imposing yet alluring Great White Wall dive-site.
Not every activity has to be high on adrenaline though. A beach picnic, romantic sunset walks and gentle kayaking are equally memorable activities in Taveuni. Holidaymakers can go around the town and explore attractions like the International Date Line marker and the Wairiki Church. For rudimentary shopping and local wares, visit the Naqara village.
Speaking of villages, a holiday in Taveuni Island is incomplete without one. The friendly locals are not just conservationists, but a part of the island’s enduring spirit as well. The villages are a living example of harmony between man and nature and through guided visits, travellers get to learn of the islanders’ way of life. They also get to experience Meke performances, Kava ceremonies and traditional methods of cooking – and the satisfied feeling that comes with a full belly of good food!
