The island is set in the Mamanuca chain of islands in Fiji, and reaching it is a happy trailer of the holiday ahead. After landing at the Nadi International Airport, travellers must go to the marina at Port Denarau. From there, the ‘Malolo Cat’ fast catamaran service winds its way around the islands and stop at the Musket Cove jetty in an hour’s time. Of course, there are faster ways too – travellers can schedule private water taxis, speedboats, seaplane transfers and even a chopper ride to land at the Resort for a true-blue Hollywood-style start to a Fiji holiday.
The resort, although spread over 400 acres, has limited itself to just 55 accommodations. With over six types ranging from cosy Raintree Rooms to beach-facing Lagoon Bures and luxurious two-bedroom Island Bures, there’s a ‘right fit’ for everybody. Each of the accommodations feature a king-size bed and single beds, ensuite bathroom with separate shower, Pure Fiji bath amenities, beach towels, ceiling fans and air-conditioning, writing desk, a breakfast bar with tea/coffee making facilities, a Bluetooth music dock, and a deck with outdoor sitting furniture.
With a resort that is sprawled over hundreds of acres on an island quite disconnected from the big bad world(!), it is but expected that there should be venues and menus to keep the guests interested. And the Musket Cove Resort, Fiji rises to the occasion magnificently.
One of the resort’s pillars of strength is its headline restaurant, Dick’s Place Bar & Bistro. Named after the resort’s founder, the restaurant is located at the centre of the resort with fantastic evening views of the sea and the beach. The menu consists of an even mix of island fare, with Asian, international favourites thrown in – and the in-house chef and the team works with the freshest organic produce and seafood in Fiji. The Trader Café is located at the edge of the resort’s marina and boasts of a great sea-and-seasoned wood vibe; guests will love its café style meals, gourmet pizza, ice cream or just a cup of coffee made to perfection.
Also close to the marina is the Yacht Club Island Bar, or just the ‘Island Bar’ as the visiting mariners call it. Yes, the Musket Cove is quite famous in yachting circles and the Island Bar has history behind it – ask the barman! Guests can cook their catch of the day at the BBQ and share stories around with a nicely chilled stubby, that’s the good life. The Poolside Fish Trap Bar is located next to the resort’s freeform pool and is a great source of nicely chilled cocktails and beers while lazing about on the sun-loungers. Of course, what island getaway would be complete without a romantic candlelit dinner? The resort has some fantastic spots set for such occasions – ask our South Pacific Specialists for more details and great romantic Fiji getaways!
The Musket Cove Resort is a Fiji holiday bestseller because it has a tonne of activities for all ages and for all speed settings; underwater, overwater or on land. For starters, it has low-tide snorkelling trip conducted every day, it’s a great introduction to the Fijian reef marine life for first timers. Guests can avail themselves of kayaks, SUP boards, snorkelling and surfing equipment and paraphernalia from the resort’s activities centre. Then, travellers can sign up for dolphin safaris, island-hopping tours of the Mamanuca Islands, guided snorkelling excursions, sunset cruises, scuba-diving charters (our fave, for sure), sports fishing and game fishing charters and so on. There’s some excellent surfing and kite-surfing action to be sampled here, too!
On land, the resort activities staff conducts trekking tours and guests can go exploring the island on marked jogging tracks. There are cycling tours for the families, too, along with guided traditional medicine and herb walks, cooking classes, basket weaving, coconut husking and beach volleyball. Oh, and they have some of the best kava ceremonies – nobody misses that. What’s kava? Only the South Pacific’s answer to beer. It’s a centuries-old tradition/recipe that uses the roots of a pepper plant to make a mild drink. Then there are drinking traditions and rituals, we must respect them. It’s fun evening, to say the least. Read all about the plant, the drink and the history in our blog ‘Kava: South Pacific’s Alt-beer?’
