The second-largest city in Fiji, Lautoka is also known as the ‘sugar city’ because it is set in the heart of island’s sugarcane growing region. Blessed with plains, arable land, the forested mountain Koroyanitu looming in the background, a booming city and picturesque resorts, it is a mini-Fiji in itself. It is steeped in history as well as nature – legend has it that the city got its name when a war-chief struck his opponent with a spear and roared ‘lau-toka’ (meaning spear-hit). Then, Captain William Bligh spotted Lautoka in 1789 whilst on his way to Timor. As he passed by, Bligh drew the coast-line for reference for future sailors and adventurers. Lautoka’s location and natural riches has made it the living industrial heart of the island, concentrating farming, jewellery-making, forestry, sugar production, fishing, etc. Its natural harbour has also seen Lautoka transform into a port and a major hub for the shipping industry.

Besides the beaches, swimming and snorkelling, the Koroyanitu mountain’s national heritage park (also called Mount Evans!) is worth a day and more. It is excellent for hiking, picnics, biking trips and nature walks amongst its forests, waterfalls, mountain streams and numerous trails. Then, take a tour of the nearby Sabeto Hot Springs and its healing mud-baths. Horseback rides, ATV tours and boat safaris are also a popular option in Lautoka. During the course of your stay, a city tour of the botanical garden, the ubiquitous flea-and-fresh-produce market, the Krishna Kaliya temple and shore excursion will hold you in rapt attention.
