The 607 islands of Federated States of Micronesia are spread over a million square miles of Pacific Ocean, making it one of the most untouched beach destinations in the world. With some of the world’s most incredible coral reef formations and beautiful lagoons, it is a true diver’s paradise.
From west to east, Micronesia’s watery states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae have some of the best holiday spots for families and couples. From its cloud forests where tropical redwoods ‘float’ among the lowest-elevation cloud formations to the Chuuk/ Truk Lagoon, said to be the wreck-diving capital of the globe – everything is pristine and waiting to be experienced. The vast seascape of FSM belies the hundreds of sights, sounds and activities on land and water that this destination provides.
The population is almost completely Pacific Islander with some immigration from other countries such as Japan, China, USA and others. As a whole, the people are very welcoming of travellers. The population is also deeply devout, with various denominations of Christians dominating in all states.
Visitors will be entranced by a culture preserved for thousands of years, beaches and coral reefs abounding in marine life at Truk, the ancient stone city of Pohnpei and swimming with giant manta rays of Yap. There are scores of monuments, relics, and memorials of World War II dotting these islands for history buffs.
Micronesia’s food is largely based on its fresh-caught pelagic seafood, along with cultivated fruits, vegetables and especially root crops. The latter include taro, yams, breadfruit, etc; while there are literally hundreds of varieties of coconuts available. Dining in Micronesia is as unique as the islands – we do recommend trying the reef fish, crab, lobster soup in coconut cream!
Travellers can pick their favourite activities from scuba-diving, wreck diving, snorkelling the coral reefs, parasailing, surfing, jet skiing, kite-surfing, game fishing, cave diving and more! From Guam, take a unique Micronesian day-tour which will see travellers start from a mountain, past a waterfall to end swimming with schools of multi-coloured fish in the coral reefs of Truk. Then, Micronesia is home to several varieties of endemic avian species like the nightingale reed-warbler, the Truk Monarch, the blue-faced parrot finch, the Pohnpei Lori, the Kosrae greater white-eye and many others. Finally, go on an island hike and see the majesty of the PahnTakai Caves and the Pohnpei Falls!
