Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Ocean Escape Resort & Spa
The Ocean Escape Resort & Spa is a boutique 4-star eco-resort offering travellers a barefoot luxury Cook Islands holiday. Set near the Turangi village on the eastern side of Rarotonga, the resort is just a 20-minute drive away after landing at the international airport. While it does have a secluded sandy beach of its own, the coral rocks and shards make reef shoes necessary – and Rarotonga has no dearth of beautiful beaches where one can swim off. The Ocean Escape Resort’s beach is beautiful and during the season, one can watch whales breaching the waters from one’s deck chair. The resort is just a 10-minute drive from the island’s famous Muri Beach.
This adults-only resort has limited its inventory to just 12 villas available in two variations. There are 10 Ocean View Villas, and just two Ocean-front Villas on tap. All villas feature a self-contained apartment design, with a living, dining and kitchen area on the ground floor and the bedroom and bathroom on the floor above, making long-stays definitely appealing. Check out our room descriptions for more details, amenities and pictures of Ocean Escape Resort’s villas!
The resort’s sandy beach is great for relaxing, and from July to October, one can watch humpback whales while they breach, tail-slap, and play in the ocean. Then, we highly recommend signing up for watersports tours. Just talk to Rarotonga’s many tour operators for guided snorkelling tours and scuba-diving charters in the lagoon’s crystal-clear waters. The resort’s prime location provides easy access to colourful coral reefs, vibrant marine life, and the opportunity to encounter graceful sea turtles.
Travellers can also embark on an adventurous journey through Rarotonga’s lush rainforest with a hike along the Cross-Island Track. Starting from Wigmore’s Waterfall, the hike goes through dense rainforests, and reaches the island’s iconic rock formation – Te Rua Manga, also known as ‘The Needle’ – from where one can see scintillating views of the island and the lagoon.
Rarotonga has a bustling island nightlife scene, so if you’re a party animal – you’re home. For culture nerds, we’d recommend signing up for a cultural night. They’re immersive and travellers can see how the Polynesian social structure and fabric is ingeniously simple and intricate at the same time.
Check out our blog on the Te Vara Nui cultural village for ideas. Soak in traditional dance performances, enjoy mouth-watering Polynesian cuisine, and experience the genuine warmth of local hospitality – enough said. The island of Rarotonga also has secret cave pools and little ‘natural spa pools’ along its rugged coastline. Rent a scooter and explore on your own, or ask a local if they can share their favourite. First-time visitors, you should totally sign up for a lagoon cruise and stand-up paddling and kayaking tours of the reefs. Travellers can also treat themselves to a pampering session at the resort’s luxurious spa! And after everything else, just relax by the Ocean Escape Resort’s massive pool and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. For more ideas, check out our blogs on Cook Islands.
