Resorts in Apia
A mix of modernity and tropical paradise
About Apia
Apia is world-famous in the way that it has everything you have heard about Samoa. Lush forests, perfect beaches and clear aquamarine seas as far as the eye can spy. The largest city and Samoa’s capital, Apia is a charming mix of modern high-rises, colonial-style buildings and traditional architecture. The city sits at the entrance of a beautiful natural harbour and therefore enjoys superb views of the Pacific Ocean. Travellers can check out villages around the city, the must-visit Palolo marine reserve and the many restaurants, markets, pubs and cultural attractions while in Apia. It also has to its name some of the most exclusive hotels and resorts, such as the Sheraton Samoa Beach Resort, the Aggie Grey Hotel, the Taumeasina Island Resort, Sinalei Beach Resort and Spa and many more.
History
As with all metropolitan cities, Apia originally started off as a tiny village. The city grew around it during the times of German rule and in 1959, became the official capital of Samoa. During Samoa’s struggle for self-rule and independence, the city was the heart of the national movement. History buffs can check out the museums in Apia, take a walk around the city to appreciate the confluence of modernity and traditional influence in architecture, sample the street-food (it’s delicious!) and opt for the many tours, hikes and safaris to explore the island.
Things to Do
For swimmers and divers, the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve is the last word in underwater recreation. In marine biodiversity and sheer awesomeness, there are very few names which can match this haven. For the more culturally inclined, walk down to the Aggie Grey Hotel. The who’s who in Hollywood have been down their boulevard and there are stories like you’ve never heard before. And then pay a visit to the beloved home of one of the most prolific and talented writers English could have lucked on – Robert Louis Stevenson. Tusitala, as he was known to the Samoans, found peace in his soul in Apia and Samoa. And so will you.
