About Tonga
Malo e Lelei ! Welcome to Tonga, the only kingdom in the entire South Pacific! This archipelago kingdom consists of 176 islands clubbed into the Tongatapu group, Ha’apai group, the Vav’u group and the Eua group. Nearly 70 percent of the population resides in the island of Tongatapu and a mere 40-45 islands are inhabited. This means, it is entirely possible to not just have a beach but an entire island to yourself, should guests be lucky. Tonga beckons with promises of serenity, crystalline waters, unsullied forests, pristine beaches and memorable experiences.
Given its long reign of monarchy and no contact with the world, Tonga presents an unique South Pacific experience. The archipelago is well-connected, with flights to Tonga being regular from Australia and New Zealand. Visitors fly into the Fua’amotu Airport on Tongatapu, from where they can hop onto boats for different islands.
Things to Do in Tonga
The Tonga archipelago is made up of 176 islands, roughly equal to the number of species divers encounter in an half-an-hour dive 😁. The island of Tongatapu has many delights to offer. Settle into island time and sample the many experiences, ranging from traditional markets, vibrant cafes, old tombs, relics and natural wonders including miles of unspoilt corals that make it a traveller’s delight. Tonga has a long way to go before it comes into the mainstream category. This translates to plenty of tropical adventures, albeit at a languid pace – some would call it perfect. Tonga is pretty awesome for water activities. Swim, snorkel and dive to your heart’s content! Explore the many underwater grottos and caves or kitesurf and kayak on the turquoise waters. Vava’u’s 50-odd islands are especially amazing for diving and recreational water activities, as its waters are clear enough with visibility stretching to more than 100 yards. Tonga is one of the very few places that offers a chance at catching sight of humpback whales. Perhaps it is the appeal of remoteness, the unspoilt nature and clear, warm waters that draw these magnificent denizens of the ocean just like tourists. But what we do know – is that this is a bucketlist opportunity and not to be missed. Tour operators regularly chart out to the seas to get up and personal with the humpback whales and guests are strongly suggested to join one.
Best Time To Visit Tonga
Unless guests are looking to sample the torrential downpours Tonga is famous for, this South Pacific kingdom is best visited during the dry, cooler months, running from May to November. Winters are cool, low on humidity and play gracious hosts to the trade winds which make for pleasant evenings. Although, given Tonga’s tropical climate an odd shower or two during the afternoons are not entirely uncommon. Early July to October is the golden period for whale-watchers! Not surprisingly, Tonga accommodations fly fast during this period. Top 5 Experiences in Tonga
Although a definitive top 5 experience list is tough to come by, our in-house Tonga experts recommend the following five as must do.
Firstly, guests must sample the whale-watching experience – it’s an absolute unit! From June to November, Vava’u’s warm tropical water plays host to the gentle humpback whales who take advantage of the island’s warm, unsullied environment to care for their newborn. While witnessing these gentle giants is not a life changing event, it comes so very close. While in Vava’u, an off-road tour of the island is an excellent idea! Stubble across pristine beaches, lush forests and friendly villages and go for a swim or two. Then, let loose with the Heilala festival, which is not just a cultural event but marks the many communities coming together. The festival commemorates the annual flowering of the heilala flower for two whole weeks and also coincides with the birthday of the Tongan Monarch. Tonga comes alive from June 26 – July 9 with cultural programmes, song and dance routines and floats and floral parades. The Heilala Beauty Pageant is also a big draw. Next, we recommend exploring the eco-paradise that is ‘Eua. Hike across well-marked trails and discover the many cliffs, caves and sinkholes in the north or the rocky coastline in the south. And finally, Tonga and its islands have some of the richest and best-preserved fishing grounds in the world! An angler’s haven, guests can expect to chart out to the azure waters and catch mackerels to trouts and everything in between!
